strip planking
Involves securing narrow, flexible strips of wood edge-to-edge around temporary forms. The forms are cut as a series of cross-sections and set up along a “strong back” or other solid base.
- Strips stapled onto a number of chipboard forms.
- Structures is sanded.
- Structures is fibreglassed.
- Forms are removed and the hull is attached.
Steel hull
To build a boat, the type of hull used is of vital importance; for example, going to sea requires a hull which is more stable than a hull used for sailing rivers (which can be more flat/round).
- Smooth curve hull – Rounded hull (no chines or corners).
- Chined and hard chined hulls.
- Flat-bottomed hull.
- Planing hulls.
Computerized cutting
It has almost become completely inconceivable to build a vessel of any size by manual lofting and cutting. For large ships, it just is not done – it’s too time consuming and therefore too expensive.
- Hull and superstructure made by computer modeling.
- Plans designed on software.
- Frames and bulkheads are defined.
- The digital machine cuts the frames.
